Blogging & SEO

If you’re a blogger, you know half the battle is getting your content found in the search engines. In order to get your content ranked in Google, and other search engines, you need to understand the basics of on-page SEO.

On-Page SEO for Beginners

On-page SEO is basically techniques used to show the search engines what your content is about, so they know where your target audience is and what to rank your content for. I’m going to share 6 basic on-page SEO tweaks that will take you 10 minutes to do.

6 Basic On-Page SEO Tweaks

1. Focus Keyword

2. Headers

3. Internal Links

4. Outbound Links

5. Optimize Images

6. Meta Description

1. Focus Keyword

Your focus keyword can be short, or long. Example of short would be “Blogging & SEO.” An example of long is “Blogging & SEO for Beginners.”

Always write your content with the focus keyword, or phrase, in mind. I find it’s easier to write the content first, then go back in and make sure I have the keyword placed throughout the content. Make sure not to over optimize the content by adding the keyword in too much, this looks spammy to Google. My go to tool for this is the Keyword Density Analyzer by SEO Book. I try to keep my keyword density below 3% for my target keyword and/or phrase.

A good plugin for this is SEO Yoast. It allows you to enter your focus keyword, as well as meta description, which I'll go further into detail below.

2. Headers

Headers are important because it tells the search engines the hierarchy of your content. It tells them what’s most important, to least important.

As you can see in this article, the first title is in an H1 header. This tells the search engines that my content is primary about Blogging & SEO. You want to make sure to include your focus keyword or phrase within the H1, or at least H2, header.

Then, I have the second header, “On-Page SEO for Beginners” in H2. The remaining headers are all in H3. Normally, you want to stick with only one H1 header, one-two H2 headers, then the rest of the headers in H3 & H4. From most important to least important.

3. Internal Links

Internal linking allows the search engines to understand your content silo and helps crawl all the pages on your site. Adding internal links to other relevant pages on your website builds authority and trust.

4. Outbound Links

Another way that builds authority and trust with the search engines is linking out to other authority websites within your niche. Make sure to tag the outbound link as nofollow.

5. Optimize Images

Images are important, not only for user experience, but for helping that page rank in the search engines. When you add an image, Google doesn’t know what the image is about, unless you tell it. You do this by adding your focus keyword or phrase as the title of the image prior to uploading. Once uploaded, make sure to add the same focus keyword or phrase as your “alt attributes.” This will also help your image rank in the search engines under their image category.

6. Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions are little snippets of information that shows up in the search results. Aside from your title, it’s the first thing your user sees before clicking your website link. Make sure to have a good call to action to entice the user to want to read more.

As mentioned above, the plugin called SEO Yoast will allow you to entire a meta description. Just like the titles and alt attributes, you want to make sure your focus keyword or phrase is within the meta description.

Final Thoughts

For any blogger, SEO is an extremely important skill that should be added to your content strategy. The basic tweaks can help your content rank at the top. If your focus keyword or phrase is more competitive, these are still the first steps you want to implement.

If these steps get you in the top results, but not to page 1, there are other off-page SEO strategies, like guest blogging, you can do to get you were you want to be.
